New smoking ceremony to be held annually

The Mayor of Hawkesbury, Councillor Mary Lyons-Buckett is pleased to announce that Council has resolved to engage a member of the local Darug community, determined by their Elders, to undertake a Smoking Ceremony at the beginning of the first Council meeting of each calendar year, commencing in 2017.

A smoking ceremony is one of the most significant ancient ceremonies performed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The ceremony involves smouldering various native plants to produce smoke which are believed to have cleansing properties and the ability to ward off bad spirits.

A smoking ceremony will be held at 6:15pm on Tuesday, 31 January on the front lawn near the flag poles outside the Council Administration Building, 366 George Street, Windsor.

The Council Meeting will then commence in Council Chambers at 6:30pm.

All members of the public are welcome to attend.
