Light Years Ahead – a project that involved nine western Sydney councils, including Hawkesbury City Council, won the Climate Change Action Award at the Local Government NSW’s Environment Awards this week.
The project involved replacing older mercury vapour street lights with more efficient LED lights and was completed in May this year.
More than 650 LED lights were installed in residential streets of the Hawkesbury, with 13,951 total lights installed across Western Sydney.
The Mayor of Hawkesbury, Mary Lyons-Buckett said the project will save Council more than $740,000 and more than 3,260 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the next 20 years.
LGNSW President Keith Rhoades said: “The enormously high standard of entries is a clear illustration of the pivotal environmental management role played by local government in NSW”.
The Light Years Ahead project involved nine Western Sydney councils – Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Holroyd, Fairfield, Hawkesbury, The Hills, Liverpool, Parramatta and Penrith Councils The Light Years Ahead project received funding of $5.2 million from the Australian Government and $2.8 million from the nine participating councils.
