Flood Risk Management Strategy launched

Infrastructure NSW launched Resilient Valley, Resilient Communities – the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley Flood Risk Management Strategy on Friday, 3 May 2017 at Governor Phillip Park, Windsor. The Flood Strategy is a comprehensive long term framework for the NSW Government, Councils, businesses and the community to work together to reduce and manage the flood risk in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley.

The Mayor of Hawkesbury, Councillor Mary Lyons-Buckett has welcomed the opportunity to be involved in the preparation of the Flood Strategy.

“In my role as Chairperson of the Hawkesbury City Council Floodplain Risk Management Advisory Committee, and as a local resident, I know that flooding is an ever present concern for our community,” the Mayor said.

“Council has been working with the Taskforce as part of the Stakeholder Reference Panel.

“We have had a preliminary review of the document and at first glance, the safety of the community is clearly a priority,” she said.

“Obviously, community assets are a central element in the Flood Strategy. Capacity of the community to respond in a timely way is also a key feature of the plan.

“Another feature is that the Flood Strategy may improve flood prediction for the Hawkesbury.

“It is reassuring to know that WaterNSW has also begun the first steps in a comprehensive environmental assessment process that will include robust community and stakeholder consultation,” the Mayor added.

“We thank Infrastructure NSW for commencing work on the Flood Strategy. We look forward to working with the NSW Government on integrated land use and road planning to ensure the interests of all stakeholders are considered.”

Council will undertake a thorough review the Strategy and is committed to working with all parties to address potential flooding in the Hawkesbury.

As part of improving community flood risk awareness in the Hawkesbury, Council is also planning a series of events in the lead up to the 150th anniversary and commemoration of the 23 June 1867 Flood, the highest recorded flood in the Hawkesbury. These upcoming community events will be promoted on Council’s Hawkesbury Events Facebook page.
