Statement from the Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne: Cancellation of Australia Day Concert at Bella Vista Farm

Australia Day is a time to reflect on what it means to be Australian and how lucky we are to call this great country ‘home’.

One of my greatest delights on Australia Day is to honour the commitment and achievements of outstanding individuals in this community [Hills Shire], and also welcoming our newest Aussie citizens.

And with the rates of COVID-19 declining within NSW and around the country, we are fortunate enough to be in a position where we can continue to celebrate Australia Day at our Australia Awards and Citizenship Ceremony.

These events are COVID-19 safe, and have been planned to abide by the current Public Health Order that is in place.

However, it is with regret, The Hills Shire Council has had to cancel its Australia Day Concert at Bella Vista Farm.

With the restrictions in place – and in these challenging times of uncertainty – it was difficult for Council to plan for this event.

We would normally be well into preparation, but in the current climate, the financial risk is far too great and the health and safety of our residents is of the utmost importance.

Even if the Public Health Order is lifted, the event the size of Australia Day at The Farm requires months of preparation, as well as locking in entertainment, food vendors, rides and activities, and so much more.

I want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding in what has been an extremely difficult year.

I look forward to celebrating Australia Day in a safe and meaningful way, and I encourage residents to also do the same.

Please keep up the good work you’ve done throughout this difficult period, and still practice good hygiene and social distancing.

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne
