Women’s AFL match a Giant first for Sydney

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Councillor Yvonne Keane will be barracking for the Greater Western Sydney Giants as they take on the Fremantle Dockers in the AFL Women’s first-ever Sydney match on Saturday, February 18.

Mayor Keane, who met with GWS marquee player Emma Swanson, said she was looking forward to watching the historic match at Blacktown International Sportspark.

“I can’t wait to see the GWS Giants women’s team take to the field in Sydney on the weekend,” Mayor Keane said.

“I encourage all Hills residents to dress in their best GWS colours and make their way to the sportspark to cheer the team on.”

Mayor Keane said the 28-member squad was a source of inspiration for many young women across the region, including her five-year-old daughter, Saskia.

“What I’m finding in my household is that we love superheroes and my daughter is looking for her own superhero, her own warrior princess and her own Wonder Woman – now little girls everywhere can find their idol in the newly-launched Women’s AFL,” Mayor Keane said.

“My daughter and other young girls now have the opportunity of cheering on these talented young women and watch them live out their dream as elite AFL players.

“They are extraordinary individuals and I wish them all the best in their future sporting careers,” Mayor Keane added.

The Hills Shire Council is also proud to work with the GWS Giants, teaming up to launch a series of events to connect with the Hills community.

These will include an International Women’s Day AFL Clinic, Seniors Game Day Outing, Live It Up Festival, Seniors Cook-off and Lunch and a Thai Chi and Yoga session with Hills community groups.
