Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre at Baulkham Hills closes on March 31 ahead of a multi-million upgrade
The much-loved swimming centre which opened 51 years ago will be knocked down and rebuilt. The closure will be for between 18 and 24 months.
Hills Shire Council’s $55-million proposed plan has been approved by the independent Sydney Central City Planning Panel.

The proposal includes a FINA Standard Olympic Sized 50m pool with 10 – lanes, a 20-metre warm water pool with spa/sauna facilities, a kids splash area, large gym and fitness space.
The plans also detail retail and management spaces, swimming clubhouse and basement car parking.
Hills Shire Mayor Michelle Byrne said Waves had served the community well, but no longer met current needs and “future expectations”.
“We understand there will be unavoidable inconvenience for some when Waves temporarily closes down … but we believe that we will be delivering an asset that can be used by our children’s children.”
“In the meantime, Council will keep working with residents, user groups, and members to understand the needs and wants of the community and how to achieve the best possible outcome for everyone.”

Colin Jarvis, a vice-president at The Hills Swimming and Life Saving Club said a new swimming centre was long overdue.
He said the club will still be active following the temporary closure with members taking part in competitions and carnivals at other venues under the club name and blue and white colours.
“This work is long overdue, we are looking forward to what should be magnificent new facilities.”
Vicki and Alan have been members of The Waves Seniors Class since 2006 and says it has been a huge part of their lives.
Vicki has been doing Saturday Aqua at the pool for over 30 years.
“We are both significantly fitter than we were 30 years ago,” they said. “We are looking to the rejuvenation of Waves as it has become an essential part of our lives.”
Council Officers have assisted groups with finding alternative locations for swimming, training and fitness.
Four construction companies have been invited to complete a Request for Tender (RFT), which will help Council identify the best company for the job.
Council also moved to adopt a Masterplan for the existing site, allowing the potential for further enhancements to be made at Waves in the future.
