Animal Shelter Open Day 2016

Local residents and their pets are sure to have fun at the annual Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter Open Day, to be held on Saturday, 30 July from 9am to midday, as a launch event ahead of Local Government Week.

Organised by the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter staff, the Open Day will include animal focused market stalls, a mobile dog wash, a dog massage therapist and advice from a dog behaviourist. Visitors can also paint their dogs’ paws on canvas which has been a very popular activity at past events. There will be free micro chipping (Hawkesbury residents only, between 9am – 10am), pets can get their photo taken with a Christmas in July theme and turned into a magnet, or owners can visit a photographer offering pet portrait photography lessons.

People with ex-shelter dogs and cats are also welcome to come along with their pets and share stories of their new lives.

The Hawkesbury Community Nursery, next door to the Shelter, will again be offering free plants to residents on the same day in celebration of National Tree Day – with hundreds of native plants to give away.

Shelter volunteers will also be on hand to talk about their experiences and to encourage more people to volunteer.

The Mayor of Hawkesbury, Councillor Kim Ford, said the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter is keen for more volunteers to join their team.

“The Shelter appreciates all of its volunteers who assist with many things including spending time with the animals to keep them socialised, exercising dogs and helping customers when they want to see the dogs and cats,” Councillor Ford said.

“Everyone is invited to bring their pets to the Open Day and is sure to have a good time. Anyone looking for a new pet or those who just want to visit the Animal Shelter are welcome. There will be something for every man and his dog as they say!’’

Located at 10 Mulgrave Road, Mulgrave, the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter covers 1030 square metres with 70 kennels and a large cattery area and services Hawkesbury City Council, The Hills Shire Council, Hornsby Shire Council and Penrith City Council.

The Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter operates Monday to Friday: 9am – 12.30pm and 2pm – 4.30pm, Saturday 9.30am – 11.30am and Sunday 7am – 9am. For more information about Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter Open Day, please call 4560 4644.
