The Gang Show Returns

By David Shaw
After a two year COVID-induced hiatus, Cumberland Gang Show returns to the Riverside Theatre these school holidays.

Our cast of Scouts and Guides are absolutely champing at the bit as they enter our final stage of rehearsals after 2 years of pandemic postponements and COVID cancellations.

Cast member Samantha Ellis explained, “It feels like a relief that finally after two years we are able to put on a show, finally being able to perform on stage showing off all the hard work that goes on, and continued to go on during our 2-year break.”

Like many in the arts community, Our 2020 show was cancelled after just the second rehearsal, a tough situation for everyone. Our 2021 show almost made it to Opening Night with Greater Sydney being plunged into lockdown while our teams were bumping into the theatre on Saturday June 26.

We are incredibly grateful for the support we received from the community in 2021 to ensure the ongoing viability of Cumberland Gang Show after the two toughest seasons in our 52 year history.

In 2022 we have rebuilt and reimagined. This year’s show, Next Level, promises to be spectacular. And so it should, it’s been three years in the making! Cumberland Gang Show is two hours of fast paced singing, comedy and dancing backed by a live orchestra.

Everyone involved in Gang Show is a Scout or Guide or supporter. This year’s show is the perfect mix of locally written material, commercial songs and Gang Show favourites.

Our Production and Creative Teams have written and produced a wealth of material for Next Level and have made use of some content from our canceled shows in 2020 and 2021 while ensuring that this year’s script is unique and spectacular in its own right.

Tristan Hornstra, who leads both the Production and Creative teams said “I am beyond excited for this year’s show and there are over 100 Scouts and Guides who are just as pumped. We will have our chance to perform some remarkable material that we have been rehearsing over the last three months.

Cumberland Gang Show’s long standing Producer/Director Rob Lang is eager to get the show back on stage, to “give 100 young people an opportunity to deliver on all their months of hard work and delight in the experience of live theatre”.

The 2022 Cumberland Gang Show opens with a number aptly called Next Level. Visit dinosaurs, explore friendship, encounter aliens, join a cycling revolution, meet Zorro, interview a Viking, sustainability and so much more!
