Seniors can enjoy free events this March as part of Seniors Week celebrations

Celebrate Seniors Week this March in the Sydney Hills with a series of free events run by The Hills Shire Council including a movie screening at Event Cinemas Castle Hill, a Tobruk Sheep Station experience, aqua aerobics classes, bushwalks, historic house tours and workshops.

If you’re over 60, The Hills Shire Council is giving you the chance to make new friends or connect with existing ones ata variety of local community events from Friday, March 3 to Friday, March 10 as part of Seniors Week celebrations.

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Councillor Yvonne Keane is encouraging residents young-at-heart to join in at one of the many events across the region.

“This week-long celebration is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the valuable contributions made by our older residents through their participation in volunteer work, sport, recreation and the arts,” Mayor Keane said.

“Whether it’s learning new skills in a workshop or getting active during a bushwalk, or enjoying the entertainment on offer, however you chose to celebrate Seniors Week there is plenty to do in The Hills.

“We’re particularly excited to be partnering with Cranbrook Residences, Event Cinemas Castle Hill and Bella Vista Gardens to bring a wonderful catalogue of exciting activities and events to celebrate our seniors.

“Our senior residents continue to make our wonderful region a great place to live, so I look forward to seeing our community come together to recognise and celebrate their amazing and ongoing contributions to our incredible Shire.”

Lights, camera, action! Seniors Week in The Hills kicks off with a free screening of new release film Jasper Jones at Event Cinemas Castle Hill on Monday, March 3. The tour, presented by the Friends of Bella Vista Farm, allows visitors to admire the picturesque grounds of this beautiful Hill Top Farm as they hear about its history and inhabitants. Following the tour visitors will enjoy a free morning tea on the lawn of the historic Homestead. Places are strictly limited.

Castle Hill Heritage Park Walk

Roughley House Visit

Explore the rich history of The Hills this Seniors Week with a tour of Dural’s historic Roughley House. Built in 1856 this home was once the residence of the Roughley family and was sold to Council for $1 by its last remaining family resident, Gordon ‘Clive’ Roughley, to ensure it would be maintained as a living history of colonial life in The Hills and remain accessible to the public. The colonial past of this heritage home comes alive this March with tours lead by knowledgeable and passionate Hills Shire Council Volunteers.

Discover the diverse habitats of Casuarina Woodland, Sandstone Ridge Heath and Sandstone Gully Woodland and learn about the unique plants and organisms that inhabit these eco-systems. This easy going walk follows formed paths with no real hills however care is required to negotiate some rocky outcrops.
