OLYMPIC POOL REBUILD
Work has started on the redevelopment of the Waves Aquatic Centre
With Hills Shire Council preparing the site for the decommissioning of all structures ahead of preliminary demolition works.
Council anticipates that construction will begin in August.
ADCO Constructions won the tender for the $55 million redevelopment which council estimates will create 170 jobs over a two-year construction and provide at least 41 full-time operational jobs over many decades.
The new centre will feature a fully accessible FINA Standard Olympic pool Sized 50m with 10 – lanes, a 20-metre warm water pool with spa/sauna facilities, a kids splash area, large gym and fitness space, learn-to-swim facilities, a warm water accessible hydrotherapy pool and new gymnasium.
There will also be a replacement clubhouse for the local Swimming and Lifesaving Club, as well as additional off-street parking.
Hills Shire Council is now approaching State and Federal governments to help with the costs of building the facility which will serve a population of more than 365,800 people within a 15-minute drive. There are nearly 40 primary and secondary schools within the Waves catchment area, the majority of which have used the pool.
Hills Shire Mayor Michelle Byrne said council has committed to a $55 million Masterplan for Waves, and is seeking State and Federal funding partnerships to bring the entire project to fruition.
“At a time when the economy is crying out for major infrastructure, this project will generate significant construction and operational benefits over many decades, estimated to be $57.6 million in output from direct construction expenditure, and $24.5 million in gross output each year of operation.”
“We have already committed significant funds and while we are in no way seeking the total cost from Federal or State governments, we are seeking some support.
“We see Council as the major contributor in a financial partnership between the three tiers of government that will provide a wonderful new regional asset,” she said.
Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre closed in March this year, 53 years after it was opened. It will be closed for between 18 and 24 months during the massive upgrade.
Elements of the original facility, such as the hand-painted fish tiles from the toddler pool by artist Jenny Larratt (pictured above) are being retained to display in the new revitalised centre.
