Lend a hand and help clean up Australia

Lend a hand and help clean up Australia

Clean Up Australia Day will be held on Sunday, 5 March and the Mayor of Hawkesbury City Council, Councillor Mary Lyons-Buckett, is encouraging Hawkesbury residents to join a team or register a site for Clean Up Australia Day.

“Hawkesbury residents are very enthusiastic every year, getting out there to help on Clean Up Australia Day.

Each year the participation rate grows and I am sure 2017 will be the biggest year in history”, Councillor Lyons-Buckett said.

2016 was a very successful year for the event. More than 750,000 volunteers removed an estimated 16,000 tonnes of rubbish from 8,205 sites across Australia. It is hoped these numbers will increase in 2017.

For more information, contact Clean Up Australia on 1800 282 329 or visit www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au.

There are just a few simple steps to registering and organising your own Clean Up Site:

 Find a site in the Hawkesbury that you think needs a Clean Up
 Register your Clean Up site as an individual or on behalf of your group or school, at www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/register
 Receive your Clean Up Kit (please allow two weeks for delivery)
 Promote your Clean Up site amongst family, friends and colleagues
 Have fun on the day and don't forget to report back to Clean Up Australia with your Clean Up report and site documentation!

A Site Supervisor Checklist can be found in the resource centre on the Clean Up website detailing how to go about choosing, registering and organising a Clean Up site.

Volunteers can search already registered sites to join at www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/join and can register online or on the day.

“Council will liaise with Clean Up Australia to ensure that the rubbish collected is disposed of after the event,” the Mayor said.

Members of the community are encouraged to register sites, as data collected is used for waste and environment reporting. Sites must be registered with Clean Up Australia to receive this assistance.

Schools can also get involved in a special Clean Up Day on Friday, 3 March 2017. Businesses can get involved on Tuesday, 28 February 2017.

This program is coordinated by Clean Up Australia Day. Please ensure all sites cleaning up on this day register at www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au. Council will only collect rubbish from sites registered with Clean Up Australia Day. Dumped rubbish will not be collected by Council and may incur a fine.
