Hills Relay Launch
The 2021 HILLS RELAY FOR LIFE launch took off in a sea of purple Relay shirts at Event Cinemas Castle Hill on Tuesday (February 23).
GUESTS at the launch included team captains and sponsors and supporters including Castle Hill MP Ray Williams and his wife Wendy.
Hills Relay Patron Hills Mayor Michelle Byrne had a council meeting so couldn’t attend but sent a letter urging people to support the 20th anniversary of Hills Relay For Life.
The Hills Shire Council was one of the original sponsors when former Councillor Cathy Aird worked with the Cancer Council to set up the community event, one of the first Relay events in Australia.
Michelle Byrne said: “Relay For Life brings together people from all walks of life and unites us in our common goal and that is to reduce the impact of Cancer on our community.
“It’s also an opportunity to support those facing cancer, to remember those who have lost their battle and to ultimately find a cure so that in the future no-one will have to hear those dreaded words “you have cancer” ever again.
“I have lost friends and loved ones to this insidious disease but I have also been fortunate as Mayor and Patron to see the positive impact this event has had on the Hills Shire. It is one of our biggest calendar days, and it has changed lives and created hope for a better future for our residents.”
Hills Relay For Life Chair Lisa Carruthers told attendees at the launch that this year’s Hills Relay For Life would be held at Castle Hill Showground on May 15 in a five-hour COVID-safe format.
Picnic-style event will feature socially distanced laps of the track as well as entertainment and the Candlelight Ceremony of HOPE.
To mark the 20th anniversary Dazzle FX and Karen D’Angola at Di Jones Real Estate have donated a firework finale.
