Clean Up Australia Day

The Hills Shire Youth Ambassadors, Hayley Irving and Anthony Radic, along with their fellow Youth Army colleagues are getting behind this year’s Clean Up Australia Day event.

The budding environmentalists will join Hills Shire Mayor, Dr Michelle Byrne at Bella Vista Farm on Sunday, March 7 to clean up the site.

Hayley, who studies biology and environmental science at university, said Clean Up Australia Day reminds everyone that they are all part of a bigger picture.

“The world will keep spinning long after we’re gone, so it’s our job to take care of it for future generations,” Hayley said. “I want young people in 80 years to experience the natural beauty of our country, and enjoy it as much as I do now. If we don’t help to clean up Australia, there’ll be nothing of worth left to see. I want to keep seeing our breathtaking Australian landscapes for the rest of my life,” she added.

Anthony, who is in Year 12, shared similar sentiments. “Clean Up Australia Day is a simple way for all of us to take pride in our beautiful Shire,” he said. “We are so lucky to live in the picturesque country that is Australia. Taking a few moments to look after our parks, schools and bushland is no hassle at all. I think Clean Up Australia Day is a reminder for all of us to do our best for the community, year round.

“Ultimately, by taking care of our community we are fostering a lasting respect for generations to come,” Anthony added.

Mayor Byrne congratulated Hayley and Anthony on their enthusiasm, and encouraged local schools, community groups, businesses and friends and families to sign-up a team and join one of Australia’s biggest clean-up initiatives.

“It’s fantastic to see how much our young people care about our local community,” Mayor Byrne said.“Hayley and Anthony are great role models and I congratulate them for taking on this wonderful initiative.

“I encourage others in our community to sign-up a team, because, together, we can all make a difference,” she added.

The first Clean Up Australia Day was held in 1990 and it has since become one of the largest community events held in Australia. Over the years, volunteers, businesses and schools have donated more than 36 million hours at various locations across the country. Together, they have removed the equivalent of 380,000 ute loads of rubbish.
