Blueberry Hills on Comleroy

A little bit of heaven, not that far out of Sydney is what Ruth Schembri and her husband Brian offer at their idyllic rural retreat at Kurrajong.

When they came across the neglected blueberry orchard and farm which had been put on the market by the elderly owners, they knew they had to buy it.

The couple moved to the farm five years ago after Ruth decided to retire from her accounting profession to look after her terminally ill father and to enjoy some time with the couple’s teenage daughters.

“As soon as we began to share our home with family and friends, we realised that there was a strong desire for a country living amongst Sydney-siders.

“I would never go back to previous life ever,” says Ruth. The farmhouse and cottages are set on over 5 hectares of land where blueberries have been grown for 50 years and potatoes before that.

Renovations and expansions at Blueberry Hills on Comleroy have created a much sought-after haven which has won numerous awards and attracted international acclaim.

Two weeks after they opened Ruth was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer but says the business has kept her motivated.

“Meeting new people, spending time with them and making new friends from all over the world was a good way for me to maintain a cheery disposition,” she says.

“Somewhere between three operations and treatment, the efforts for a quick recovery, caring for my father and welcoming our guests, I found the inspiration to expand our business.”

The expansion has resulted in additions to the original guesthouse and two self-contained cottages.

“Guests enjoy sunrise and sunset from the ridge top position with mountain views to the west and city views to the east while sheep and alpacas graze in the paddock,” said Ruth.

“Generally, people come for time out. It is so peaceful.” Ruth says the property has not been threatened by bushfires and still offers a rural retreat not far from the city.

Blueberry Hills on Comleroy is at 464 Comleroy Rd, Kurrajong.

There is a three-day mid-week package currently on offer of 3 nights from $435 including breakfast daily.
