Club helps kids jump into reading

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Councillor Yvonne Keane, is encouraging children to put on a cape and delve deep into the literary world this summer.

Hills Shire Libraries – Dural, Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills and Vinegar Hill – annual Summer Reading Club for school-aged children is now open.

Mayor Keane said the Reading Club, held over eight weeks, encourages children to discover great authors and illustrators, while exploring this year’s theme of Superheroes and Villains.

“This year’s theme promises to provide some epic titles for young people to read, learn about and enjoy,” Mayor Keane said.

“Research has shown that children who read for pleasure have strong literary skills, expand on their worldwide view, have a better understanding of other people’s feelings and a sense of connectedness.

“The Summer Reading Club promotes a love of books and helps students to return to school with stronger vocabulary and comprehension skills,” Mayor Keane added.

Summer Reading Club is for children aged five years and older.

Club members earn rewards throughout the two-month long program.
