2016 Hawkesbury Sports Awards winners announced

The winners of the 2016 Hawkesbury Sports Awards were announced at a special Presentation Night at Windsor RSL on Friday, 13 May.

This annual event, proudly sponsored by Hawkesbury City Council, Windsor RSL and Vintage FM acknowledges sporting accomplishments of community members as well as the contributions of individuals to sporting clubs through support roles.

This year’s inspirational winners were judged by Council's Civic and Citizenship Committee, and are below:

 Sports Person of the Year – Sarah Jordan
From the Northern Archers Club in Windsor, Sarah is an extremely talented individual that has demonstrated a high level of ability in mastering archery in a short time frame and has achieved outstanding results on a regional, national and international level. Sarah competed in the 2016 World Oceania Championships in Tonga and received a silver medal and two bronze medals.

 Junior Sports Person of the Year – Ashleigh Hill
Ashleigh is a member of Hawkesbury Martial Arts. Having participated in Karate since a very young age, she has spent countless hours training and perfecting her chosen sport through her ongoing tenacity. She is currently the Australian National Karate Champion and has won multiple gold medals at the NSW State Championships.

 Junior Encouragement Award – Frederick Peters
Frederick participates in a range of sports, such as oz-tag, softball, baseball, tennis, cricket, and rugby league to name a few, and has shown a large amount of persistence for such a young sportsman. This dedication needed to be recognised with a special award, to encourage other young sportsmen and women in the Hawkesbury to give all sports a go.

 All Abilities Sports Person of the Year – Sandy Freeman
Sandy is a member of Windsor Swim Club and competed in the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles, where she won two gold medals, a bronze medal, and fourth place. She also broke two world records in the 200m backstroke as well as in the relay. Her ongoing commitment to swimming is an inspiration to all.

 Team of the Year – Kachan School of Tumbling and Performance, KSTP National Tumbling Team
The six members of this team have individually qualified to represent Australia at the upcoming World Age Group Competition in Denmark. The team’s individual results at the Australian Gymnastics Championships include a gold medal, fourth place, seventh place, ninth place, tenth place, and 23rd place. The coach is Rebecca Kachan and the members are Sophie Wilson, Ellie Smith, Ethan McGuinness, Henry Clark, Blake Grainger, and Jack Hemmings.

 Official of the Year – Donna Keith
Donna, who is a member of Swimwest Swimming Club in South Windsor, has dedicated countless hours to refereeing at Swimwest, as well as at Windsor Swim Club on a weekly basis. The Club is extremely grateful and with the help of volunteers like Donna, their sporting community can continue to develop strong sportsmen and women.

 Coach of the Year – Clarence Rodrigues
Clarence, a member of Destiny Martial Arts Australia, has a strong ability to mentor students in such a complex and detailed sport, passing on skills to other enthusiastic sportsmen and women.

Clarence achieved a number one ranking in the NSW Championships in 2013 and 2014, as well as
receiving his fifth Dan Black belt.

 Sporting Excellence Medallion (seeks to recognise those who have made an outstanding
contribution to, or represented the Hawkesbury in sport of any kind at a district or higher level for a minimum of five continuous years) – Aaron Donaldson

From Windsor Swim Club, Aaron’s involvement and representation in swimming in the Hawkesbury since just eight years of age is truly impressive. Aaron competed in the NSW State Age championships in January this year. He also swam 10 kilometres in the YMCA Swimathon.

 Service to Sport Medallion (previously known as the Hawkesbury District Sports Certificate) 1st recipient – Jamie Cruickshank

From Glossodia Cricket Club, Jamie’s years of dedication and support of cricket in the Hawkesbury since a young age is an outstanding accomplishment. His personal achievements, particularly being in multiple Premiership teams and a winning team, should be commended. Jamie is a great sportsman who shows respect to all players and officials on and off the field.

2 nd recipient Helen Palmer
From Windsor Swim Club, Helen’s dedication and commitment to the Club has achieved much needed fundraising and financial support in order to provide trophies and awards at presentations that would not have otherwise been possible. The Club is extremely grateful for the countless hours she has invested in the Club.

3 rd recipient – Kerry Wagner
Also from Windsor Swim Club, Kerry has also dedicated an exceptional amount of hours to support the Club’s fundraising events and other financial support in order to provide trophies and awards. It is only with volunteers like Kerry that the local sporting community can continue to compete and develop strong sportsmen and women that are able to represent the Hawkesbury on a regional, state and international stage.

Mayor of Hawkesbury, Councillor Kim Ford said, “Sport is such an integral part of life in the Hawkesbury and I am honoured to present these awards to the extremely deserving participants.” Councillor Ford said.

“The presentation night on Friday was a fantastic way to meet and acknowledge local sporting champions and the essential people who support them. The Hawkesbury community should be proud it is home to sportsmen and women of this calibre.”
