Remagine Art Prize is back with $11,000 in Prize Money
The Hornsby Shire Council’s Remagine Art Prize is back for its 2025 edition, with a total of $11,000 in prize money up for grabs.
The prize challenges artists to consider the environmental impact of waste production and find creative ways to reuse materials in their artwork. This year’s theme, RE:THINK TO RE:PURPOSE, reflects the growing importance of reducing waste and conserving natural resources.
The competition is open to artists working in a variety of mediums, including digital stills, sculpture, mixed media, ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking, and photography. There are six prizes to be won, including a $5,000 grand prize, a $2,000 highly commended prize, a $1,500 recycled/reused materials award, a $1,000 local artist award, a $1,000 youth award (for artists aged 18-25), and a $500 people’s choice award.
According to Hornsby Shire Council Mayor Warren Waddell, the theme was chosen to highlight the importance of reusing and repurposing materials before they become waste. He emphasized the urgency of addressing the waste crisis, which is becoming increasingly evident at the local government level.
“Rethinking how we manage household waste is essential to reducing landfill use,” Mayor Waddell said. “Finding creative ways to give old items new life, whether in art or everyday life, is a vital step towards building a more sustainable community.”
The Remagine Art Prize has grown in popularity over the years, attracting artists from across Australia. This year’s theme is expected to spark a thought-provoking conversation about waste reduction and climate change.
The deadline for entries is Thursday, May 1, 2025, at 5pm. Winners will be announced at an award ceremony on Friday, June 13, 2025. The Remagine Art Prize exhibition will be held from June 13 to June 29, 2025, at the Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre in Hornsby.
