CHRG’s First Gallipoli Scholarship Recipient

Created by a group of World War I “Diggers” in 1996, The Gallipoli Scholarship is awarded to direct descendants of Australian and New Zealand Veterans to assist with the cost of their tertiary education.

The scholarship is based on academic achievement and necessitous circumstances that could otherwise preclude a student from pursuing their education, and it is a wonderful way to keep the ANZAC spirit alive in our younger generations.

A special moment last week for CHRG’s President Mr. John Payne, as he presented CHRG’s (Castle Hill RSL Group) first sponsored Gallipoli Scholarship award to the very deserving recipient – local resident, Miss Emma Dubos, who completed her HSC last year at Mount St Benedict College in Pennant Hills.

“Emma is the great-granddaughter of Lawrence Albert Hobbs who served in WWII from 1942 to 1946 and is the great, great-niece of Sidney Cannon who served in WWII until 1941 when he was sent home injured. She is passionate about preserving the diversity of Australia’s marine life and making positive changes to our marine landscape.”

“We are proud and privileged that CHRG can assist with the costs of Emma’s first year of studies in a Bachelor of Coastal and Marine Sciences degree at Newcastle University,” said President John Payne.

Not only is Emma an exceptional student, she has been a dedicated volunteer at the Women’s Safe Room at Parramatta Family Court and is also a member of the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA), qualifying her to participate in marine rescue operations.

“We couldn’t think of a more deserving recipient than Emma – she is bright, dedicated, community, and environmentally minded, and additionally, she shares CHRG’s ethos and values. Gallipoli Scholarships are just another example of the contributions made by RSL Clubs and other corporate sponsors to keep the spirit of ANZAC alive,” President Payne concluded
