Adding up to Gold

Twins Cloris and Iris Xu from Baulkham Hills High have won gold medals at the recent European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad.

Cloris Xu (pictured wearing glasses) was ranked 12th and Iris Xu was ranked 20th out of 222 contestants from around the world.

The four member Australian team included Grace Chang Yuan from Victoria and Eunsu Choi from Brisbane.

Overall, Australia finished in third place out of 57 countries with our girls all achieving individual gold medals, which are awarded to participants who score 29 or higher (out of a possible 42).

Grace came 6th individually and Eunsu 15th.

Gold MedalsAustralia was the only country where all team members achieved gold medals. Individually, all of the Australian team members placed in the top 10 percent.

This is by far the best result Australia has achieved at EGMO, and the individual results were particularly impressive.

The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad is an international mathematics competition similar in style to the International Mathematical Olympiad, with two papers taken on consecutive days.

This is the fifth year that the team was led by Thanom Shaw, who was Australia’s inaugural Team Leader and former Baulkham Hills High School student.
