Young and inspiring Hills residents recognised with Outstanding Achievement Awards

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne presented Matthew Boggon with an Outstanding Achievement Award for his dedication to helping others and his contributions to The Hills Shire community on Wednesday, May 30.

Matthew is an active teen who is passionate about inspiring others to do their best and helping his local Lions Club, the Crestwood Leos, to continue their beneficial work in the region.

To add to his impressive list of credentials, the 19-year-old from Beaumont Hills was recently announced the 2018 Australian Leo of the Year.

Mayor Byrne said it was easy to see why the Macquarie University student secured the impressive role.

“Matthew has done The Hills Shire proud,” Mayor Byrne said.

“The award recognises a young person’s leadership skills, their service to the community and contributions to the Lions Club and Matthew has done all these things and many more. His desire to spark passion and philanthropy among others is inspiring.

“I wish Matthew all the best and I can’t wait to see what he does next.”

During his time as Australian Leo of the Year, Matthew will travel around Australia and promote “how your passion can be used to help others”. He will also drive interest for joining Leo Clubs.

Mayor Byrne also presented Sophie Smith from Maroota with an Outstanding Achievement Award earlier this month.

At just eight-years-old, Sophie made the daring decision to cut 40-centimetres of her long locks off to raise funds for Variety: The Children’s Charity for children in need.

“Her beautiful hair will now be turned into a wig for someone who has lost their hair due to a medical condition,” Mayor Byrne said.

“She has also raised $800 for the charity – smashing her $500 goal.

“This money will be used to help a family purchase a wig, which can cost them anywhere of up to $6,000. It can also be used to purchase vital medical equipment.

“I thank Sophie for her generous efforts.”
