THE ROTARY CLUB OF THE HILLS – KELLYVILLE AWARDS – Pride of Workmanship & Community Service Awards 2018

Rotary is about making a difference and works under the motto “Service Above Self”. In May, The Rotary Club of the Hills – Kellyville seeks to recognise members of the local community for their special work that contributes to communities – local or further afield. While there are many people who contribute to others, they can at times be hard to find as so often these individuals work tirelessly for others and don’t seek any recognition for their work. So the club seeks out these special individuals for two categories of awards: Pride of Workmanship and Community Service.

An Awards Night was held in May to present these special awards and recognition was attended by over 50 people including The Hon. David Elliott (Member for Baulkham Hills, Minister for Counter Terrorism, Minister for Corrections and Minister for Veteran Affairs), Michelle Byrne (Mayor, Hills Shire Council) and Mark Taylor (State Member for Seven Hills).

There were four “Pride of Workmanship” Awardees:

• Michael Were – Manager, Open Heart International

• Vicky Harvey Teacher, Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School, Kellyville

• Sharon Russell – Customer Care Officer, Stockland Mall, Winston Hills

• Anthony Day – Apprentice, Armack Building Services, Winston Hills

There were three “Community Service” Awardees:

• Peter Peterson – for Assistance to Rotary, Scouting and Schools

• Patrick Bowie – for Assistance to Aged Care and Disability Services

• Ovini Sellaperuma – for Assistance to Rotary and the Disadvantaged

The Rotary Club of the Hills-Kellyville not only holds events in the local community, it also raises funds for numerous programs far and wide, from the Hills area to outback Australia to overseas communities with specific needs. Some of the Local programs include the local Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony, Vocational Excellence Awards and Literacy Initiatives for students. Further afield the club continues its Bourke Public School Breakfast Club project, which aims to improve school attendance rates and give the students a good start to their learning day. At an International level, the club completed its twelve year project of refurbishing classrooms, dining and assembly halls, Eco-Friendly composting toilets and finally building a cyclone proof class room at Arep Provincial School, Vanua Lava, Vanuatu.
