As 2024 begins, the Hills Shire Council encourages Hills residents to participate in a volunteer bush care activity at Wheelie Park Bushcare to kick off the new year.

Anyone, even those without green thumbs, is welcome starting Sunday, 7 January 2024. From 9:00 AM to noon, volunteers can help maintain over 5,000 planted trees in Wheelie Park at the Gables.

As of writing, sessions are available every first Sunday of the month until July 2024, with morning tea biscuits provided.

“This group will be maintaining these plantings and infill planting with native groundcovers and shrubs of the Cumberland Plain to increase connectivity and provide habitat and food for native animals,” the Hills Shire Council announced.

The slot can be reserved online via Eventbrite here: Wheelie Park Bushcare Group. Wheelie Park is accessible via the Cataract Road in the Gables. The Council advises anyone new to volunteering in the Hills to complete an online application in the Hills Volunteer Portal.

On 30 July 2023, the Hills Shire Council, along with over a hundred community members and volunteers far and wide, joined together to participate in the National Tree Day planting at the Gables, the biggest in Australia.

Native trees, such as gum trees from the Bidjiwong Nursery in Baulkham Hills, were among the 5,000 saplings planted during the event.
