Sydney Hills Garden Competition

Hills Garden Comp promo Sydney Hills Garden CompetitionIf you have a beautiful garden or have always admired a local garden, now is the perfect time to think about gaining recognition for it by entering the Sydney Hills Garden Competition.

This year marks 65 years since the first garden competition was run and became the forerunner of the annual Orange Blossom Festival.

It was the brainchild of Councillor Eric Mobbs and has a significant place in the cultural history of “The Garden Shire”.

Hills residents, businesses and institutions are encouraged to register their gardens by 5pm on Friday. 13 th September 2024 for spring judging during the Orange Blossom Festival.

Entry forms are available at www.hillsgardencomp.org.au or The Hills Shire Council’s website.

The Sydney Hills Garden Competition is run by The Rotary Club of the Hills-Kellyville every year and has a variety of categories for gardeners from small town houses to residential gardens, to gardens of industrial, commercial and retirement complexes.

The competition covers a diverse range of categories for all types of gardeners – even young gardeners in the schools category. Specialty gardens such as cottage, communal and environmentally friendly gardens are also included.

Hills Garden Comp 2 copy Sydney Hills Garden CompetitionThe competition is open to gardens located in the Hills Shire and adjoining parts of the suburbs of North Rocks, Carlingford, Northmead, Winston Hills, Baulkham Hills, West Pennant Hills, Cherrybrook, Glenhaven, Dural, Arcadia, Galston and Glenorie.

Gardens are judged by professional and experienced horticulturists and landscapers. In the past judges have included local gardening gurus Judy Horton, Ross Miller, the late Bruce Pike as well as Horticulturalist Lucia Fowler.

Rotary Club of the Hills-Kellyville President, John van den Burg said: “There are so many beautiful gardens since the weather challenges of the last few years. We’re so lucky to have so many garden proud residents who are able to enjoy their surrounds in the Hills district. “Spring is a special time to celebrate the fine gardens of the garden shire.”

Judging will be held between 16 th and 20 th September culminating in an Awards Night on Friday 27 th September when award winning gardens and their gardeners will be honored and receive prizes.

The Rotary Club of the Hills-Kellyville has had a long association with gardeners in The Hills, having run the Garden Competition for over 20 years and the Hills Open Gardens. The Club proudly opened a Community Garden in Baulkham Hills in March 2021 to mark the 100th year of Rotary in Australia.
