Permaculture Hawkesbury: In the Garden Program for ages 2 to 4
Permaculture Hawkesbury Valley Inc is back with another pair of fun gardening activities perfect for kids this Summer 2024.
Kids can join two Term 1 ‘In The Garden’ programs, one for those aged 2 to 4 and a second for those aged 5 to 15 years. The 7-week program is part of the organisation’s regular workshops that offer a diverse curriculum with hands-on interactions with livestock, poultry, vegetables, and all the critters a typical garden has.
For the Pre-K kiddos, one term costs $100 for the first child and $80 per term for every subsequent child from the same family. Class dates are on Mondays: 29th January, 5th February, 12th February, 19th February, 11th March, 18th March, and 25th March.
UPDATE as of 9th January 2024: Mondays are now sold out according to Permaculture Hawkesbury Valley Inc. Slots have been opened on Fridays, starting at 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM. Session starts on 2nd February, 9th February, 16th February, 23rd February, 8th March, 15 March, and 22nd March.

The topics that each week will cover are as follows:
Week 1
- Fairies and butterfly garden. We will learn about pollinators and what plants attract butterflies. We will plant out a butterfly attracting garden and decorate it with fairy figurines and furniture. Who knows, maybe we will attract fairies to our garden too!
- Water and weed the garden.
- Check on the chickens, ducks and big goats. Bottle feed the baby goats.
- Free play
Week 2
- Scarecrow making. We will learn about pests in the garden and ways we can protect our crops. We will make a scarecrow to watch over our garden for us.
- Water and weed the garden.

Week 3
- Seed Germination. We will learn about how seeds germinate and what seeds need to grow big and strong. We will sow bean seeds in a jar and watch them sprout and form root systems

Week 4
- Mini Beasts. We will learn about what bugs live in our garden and if they help or hinder. We will go on a mini beast hunt around the garden. We will make a mini bee hotel to take home.

Week 5
- Mini greenhouse. We will learn about how we can create perfect conditions for plants to grow. We will make and sow mini greenhouses to take home and grow.

Week 6
- Compost and Worms. We will learn about how we can turn our kitchen scraps into nutrients for our garden. We will feed our worms, turn our compost piles and read a special worm story

Week 7
- Animal care. We will learn about what’s involved in caring for our chicken, ducks and goats. We will prepare a yummy, nourishing, treat for our chooks and feed them.

Attendees are advised to wear enclosed shoes, a hat, and gardening gloves (optional) and bring their own water bottle or morning tea.
