Model Shipbuilding Expo

Retired engineer Evert van Oeveren has become an enthusiastic boatbuilder on a small scale. The Castle Hill resident turned to building model ships after moving into a Castle Hill retirement unit with his wife Cathy. In the past eight years he has built 8 ships and is now working on a model of the 17th century Dutch sailing ship the Duyfken. The models, which range in scale from 1:80 to 1:50, take almost a year to painstakingly put together.

Evert has turned the second bedroom of his Castle Hill home into a workroom and the china cabinets now showcase his model ships including the Titanic and the Cutty Sark.

He is one of several locals who are members of the Sydney Model Shipbuilder’s Club which will be hosting The Sydney Festival of Model Shipbuilding on the weekend of October 15th and 16th at Wests Ashfield Leagues Club.

Evert will be exhibiting three of his models: a Dutch Botter – traditional fishing boat from The Netherlands, a model of the schooner Virginia and the Belgium training ship Mercator.

There will be about 100 model ships on show at the free expo, from Ocean Liners to fully rigged sailing ships, miniatures, ships in bottles and radio-controlled replicas of famous vessels.

The Expo is being hosted by the Sydney Model Shipbuilders Club who are keen to introduce people of all ages to their passion. There will be talks and demonstrations during the event.
