NorthConnex Congestion-Busting Breakthrough
Earlier this month I visited NorthConnex to witness the project’s first tunnel breakthrough. Alongside Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, I caught up with some of the 1,500 daily workers who are helping us deliver the project on time and on budget.
Tunnelling is progressing at around 350 metres per week, and this significant breakthrough means we are now only two years away from the completion of NorthConnex. Once opened, NorthConnex will take 5,000 trucks off the road every day, allowing local communities to reclaim Pennant Hills Road for their daily commute, shopping trip or school drop-off run.
NorthConnex is due to open at the end of 2019. I am proud to be part of a Federal Government that has invested $412 million dollars into a gamechanger for Berowra.
Jobs Jump and Debt Down
The Government’s Midyear Economic and Fiscal Update reflect a growth in jobs and a decline in debt.
383,000 jobs have been created in Australia over the past 12 months – more than 1,000 jobs every day. Through the Government’s small business tax cuts, industrial relations reforms as well as local infrastructure investment like NorthConnex, we are continuing to deliver jobs and growth.
Our path to bringing the budget back to balance in 2020/21 remains intact, thanks to a responsible approach to economic management. The Government is reining in debt – with MYEFO confirming a gross debt reduction of $23 billion by 2020/21, which means a saving of $1 billion a year in interest payments.
Through a focus on jobs and growth, we’ve bolstered our efforts to balance the Budget and strengthen the services that Australians rely on.
