Hawkesbury Veggie Barter Christmas Trade Meet 2023

As the days go by, Christmas is now nearly several weeks away. In turn, Permaculture Hawkesbury Valley Inc. invites residents to prepare for its upcoming Hawkesbury Veggie Barter on Sunday, 17 December 2023.

In collaboration with the Hawkesbury Earthcare Centre, attendees can barter various things, such as baked goods and their home-grown produce and items perfect for the Christmas season.

While there will be a limited amount of chairs and tables from the Centre, everyone is encouraged to bring and set up their own tables.

Sale will not be permitted in the Hawkesbury Veggie Barter, according to Permaculture Hawkesbury.

The organisation released a list of the allowed goods and items that can be traded, which include:

  • Veggies
  • Fruit
  • Nuts
  • Herbs
  • Honey

  • Eggs
  • Preserves/preserving jars/preserving pots
  • Hunted/Caught meat (venison, seafood, pig, rabbit, et cetera)
  • Home-grown livestock
  • Baked goods
  • Homemade cleaning products
  • Homemade beauty/bathroom products
  • Homemade household/garden items
  • Beeswax wraps
  • Homemade clothing
  • Homemade jewellery
  • Seedlings
  • Seeds
  • Manure
  • Gardening equipment
  • Worms
  • Worm farms
  • Composting items
  • Labour/butchering/related services
  • Items suitable as Christmas gifts

Items not allowed are decorative/ornamental plants (unless they are presented as suitable Christmas gifts on the mentioned occasion, store-bought produce (unless turned into a homemade preserve), or the sale of goods for money.

The schedule is as follows:

  • 10:00 AM – Arrive and setup
  • 10:30 AM – Walk around and view items on offer for potential trade
  • 11:00 AM – Barter and trading begins
  • 1:00 AM – Conclusion of event

As the Christmas season draws near, the organisers encourage attendees to decorate their tables to add to the festive and family-friendly vibe of the upcoming event.

It is advised for residents to bring along reusable bags, containers and personal cups to bring home their bartered items and to enjoy refreshments to have a waste-free event, thereby lessening the amount of single-use plastics generated.  

“Please be respectful when bartering with each other. If you are not happy with a trade-on offer, politely decline, and each party respect the decision and move on,” the organisation reminded.
