Galston High School Partners with Dural Men’s Shed to Enrich Student Experience
By Julia Petrulis
Galston High School has launched a dynamic partnership with the Dural Men’s Shed, providing students with hands-on learning opportunities in woodworking, metalwork, and electronics. This innovative program has engaged Year 8, 9, and 10 students in practical skills development, guided by skilled hobbyists and former professionals.
The program began with Year 8 students in Term 2 and continued with Year 9 and 10 students in Term 3. Plans are underway to include another group in Term 4.
Each Friday, students rotate through three workshops. In metalwork, they designed and welded custom desk organisers. Electronics sessions involved building battery-powered remote-control cars, culminating in a final race. Woodworking projects included crafting car frames, bowls, and paper towel holders using lathes. A highlight for the boys was the weekly sausage sizzle lunches, where their impressive appetites left everyone astounded.
The program not only engaged students with exciting projects but also helped them develop essential life skills such as persistence, resilience, and focus. They refined their work to high standards and improved project management and communication skills through mentorship.
A key aspect of the program is the opportunity for students to connect with positive male role models from the Men’s Shed. The strong rapport between students and volunteers has been a significant benefit, with students eager to learn from their mentors’ experiences.
Galston High School looks forward to continuing this valuable partnership and deeply appreciates the Dural Men’s Shed for their dedication to helping students achieve their personal best.
