From Ferries to Fiona Germaine!

The Webbs Creek, Wisemans Ferry and Sackville ferry services are a lifeline to the nearby communities of Hawkesbury. Residents and businesses rely on them to get to school, to work, to attract customers, to attend medical services, attend sport and remain connected.

The industrial action by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) has caused disruptions to the daily lives of the people in this part of The Hills Shire and Hawkesbury region.

The stoppages have proceeded with minimal notice. Ferry users have had to allow considerable extra time to travel and I know the ferry workers are uncomfortable with the pain this has caused.

Following on from my interventions in Parliament, the advocacy from the community and the media attention gained, the MUA and contractor Birdon Group, have decided to sit down at the negotiation table. I have also been advised that Transport for NSW has become more engaged in the dispute and is pressuring the parties to reach a workable employment agreement.

Fiona Germaine Hawkesbury S 20024 Woman Of The Year From Ferries To Fiona Germaine!

On a more uplifting note, let me introduce you to Fiona Germaine, Hawkesbury’s 2024 Woman of the Year! Fiona has a remarkable story as a successful international model with Versace and owner of a fashion business.

A few years ago, Fiona and her family moved to Hawkesbury for a tree change and like most of us, fell in love with Hawkesbury’s distinct landscape and culture.

The Black Summer Bushfires brought out Fiona’s ability to identify critical needs and to find solutions. She felt compelled to help her community by working with volunteers to provide food and emergency resources for those isolated in remote parts of the electorate.

When floods swept throughout the region, Fiona again mustered help to provide essentials and support to those most vulnerable.

While raising a family, Fiona enjoys competitive showjumping and has used her extensive business background to establish a new flower-farming business, Vivaldi Flora, with a vision to position local, eco-friendly and sustainable practices in a luxurious and stylish way.

As Director of Bells Line of Road Business Chamber, Fiona advocates for businesses to promote tourism in the area too. Congratulations Fiona!
