Clean Up Australia Day

In 1989, Clean Up Australia Day was started by the late Ian Kiernan. His daughter Pip is still heavily involved and now it is a global day to help rid the world of rubbish.

For the past five years, Phillip Combe and volunteers have been collecting rubbish along the banks of Pyes Creek, Keighran Place, Cherrybrook. Some items they collect amaze him. 9 kg cylinders, motorbikes, real estate signs, tyres and shopping trolleys along with the usual soft plastics and bottles. “It is a day when we do some environmental good for our waterways.

To make it a bit of fun for the volunteers and to encourage them to come back each year, I put on a sausage sizzle with drinks afterwards. It is so good when we know we aren’t in this alone”, Phillip said.

If you would like to be involved in Clean Up Australia Day, register for Sunday, 6 th March, 2022 on cleanupaustraliaday.org.au
