“Having a child in hospital affects the whole family in a big way. When a baby, toddler, or teenager comes through our doors, they aren’t alone. The entire family comes with them, if not physically, then emotionally,” said Anne McFadden, Director of Planned Giving, Sydney Childrens Hospitals Foundation.

A hospital experience can stir up a lot of emotions, from fear to gratitude, for the family and their extended family and friends. Many people who have had a child in hospital, whether their own or a loved one’s, feel deeply impacted by the ordeal.

It often sparks a strong desire to give back in some way, whether through direct support to the family, volunteering, or even donating funds to help other children in the hospital.

“Providing support and care for the parents and families is so very important because when the family is supported, they are able to give their full attention to their child in hospital”, added Ms McFadden.

Supporting children in hospital now is very important, but so is planning for the many children and their families who are yet to walk through the hospital corridors.

One Mum who is planning for future support of children and families is Lyn Cecil, a Mum of a baby boy who survived thanks to the wonderful care received at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick in the 1970s. ‘I’m a retired Mum.
