100 Students Visited the Hawkesbury Council
Nearly 100 Year 5 and 6 students from local primary schools visited Hawkesbury Council last week to enhance their understanding of local government.
The half-day School Leadership Program at the Council’s offices in Windsor aims to enhance students’ knowledge of democracy and foster an interest in community leadership.
Students met Hawkesbury Mayor Les Sheather, Deputy Mayor Sarah McMahon, Clr Eddie Dogramaci and Clr Peter Ryan. They were introduced to the different levels of government and the responsibilities of local government versus the State and Commonwealth governments.
Students learned about the Hawkesbury Local Government Area, testing their knowledge of the LGA’s natural environment, towns, infrastructure, and community and Council facilities. The students were given a range of activities to do and took part in a mock Council meeting to determine whether the Council should approve a local facility.
The School Leadership Program has been running since 2022 and has seen 660 Hawkesbury students learn more about the Council.
