Sparkling Diamond Weddings
MARJORIE AND DAVE COLE celebrated their Diamond Wedding towards the end of last year and are now approaching their 60th anniversary of living in Australia.
They were married in Manchester in the UK and hadn’t been married for long when Dave saw the adverts for living in Australia.
“He said why don’t we give it a go and we did,” said Majorie. “The hardest part was telling my parents. When I told my Gran we were going to see Sydney Harbour she asked who he was.”
Rather than come by ship the couple arrived by Boeing 707 “We were one of the first groups to fly to Australia and we were wearing all our winter clothes and our heavy coats and we landed in February and it was so hot.”
“We stopped about 4 or 5 times to refuel. The young couple’s arrival in Sydney coincided with the change to decimal currency on February 14th 1966. A few years later Marjorie’s parents and her sister moved to Australia.
The couple moved around Sydney for the first few years looking for the right place to live and hit upon Baulkham Hills where they have lived for over 50 years in the same house.
They have two sons, Simon and Nigel, and three grandchildren. They are lifetime members of the Ulysses motorcycle club for people ages over 40 and for a time they were volunteer guides at Old Parliament House in Parramatta. They are still involved in the Hills Men’s Shed.
“We are very happy,” said Majorie. “No regrets.”
