Permaculture Hawkesbury Valley Inc Pre-K Kids In The Garden Program

Ready to plant more veggies? Permaculture Hawkesbury Valley Inc is now accepting Pre-K Kids for Term 2 of its ‘Kids In the Garden Program’ at the Australiana Pioneer Village starting late April.

The 9-week program offers diverse activities geared toward Pre-K Kids and is available in four different sessions. Term 2 features topics on animal care and feeding, gardening, composting, seeds, pests, and a final week of toasting marshmallows by the campfire.

There will be two Monday classes: the first will run from 9:00 to 10:00 AM, while the other will run from 10:45 to 11:45 AM. Meanwhile, Thursday classes run from 10:30 to 11:30 AM, while Fridays begin at 1:00 PM and end at 2:00 PM.

According to Permaculture Hawkesbury, the 9-week program will consist of the following main topics:

  • Week 1 – Pollinator Garden: “We will learn about pollinators and what plants attract butterflies, bees, and other pollinators to the garden. We will plant out a pollinator-attracting edible flower garden.”
  • Week 2 – Goat Care: “We will learn about caring for our Boar goats and Nigerian Dwarf goats. We will bottle feed and brush our baby goats.”
  • Week 3 – Seeds of Life: “We will investigate different vegetable and flower seeds. We will learn how and when to sow them and how and when to save them to grow new crops.”
  • Week 4 – Pest or Guest: “We will go on a bug hunt around the garden and remove all unwanted guests.”
  • Week 5 – Exploring the Seasons: “We will learn about the four seasons and how we grow food through the changing seasons. We learn how to use tools to help our plants grow out of season.”
  • Week 6 – Composting: “We will learn how to create a compost and what we can and can’t put in it. We will gather autumn leaves to add to our compost.”
  • Week 7 – Bug Attack: “We will learn how to protect our precious winter crops from the dreaded bug attack. We will go around the garden and use different organic methods to help protect our crops.”
  • Week 8 – Chicken Care: “We will learn what chickens can eat, what they need to be happy and healthy and what they give us in return.”
  • Week 9 – Campfire fun: “For our last class of the term, we will celebrate our hard work by sitting by the campfire toasting marshmallows and enjoying our beautiful garden that we have spent the term lovingly growing and caring for.”
