Cultures of The Hills

Monique, raised in Baulkham Hills with a mixed Japanese and Australian heritage, struggled to find her identity during her school years. She often tried to fit in, neglecting her cultural background. However, studying Japanese in high school sparked a realization of her culture’s importance.

This led her to move to Japan, an experience that defined her twenties. She reconnected with her culture and language, witnessed significant events like the Covid pandemic and the Olympics, spent time with her grandmother, and started a family.

Now back in the Hills, Monique balances parenthood, study, and her role as a Youth and Community Worker at Hills Community Aid. She’s passionate about creating a welcoming space for young people, encouraging them to embrace their unique identities amidst social pressures.

Hills Community Aid offers diverse programs, including an Art Space, Crochet Club, Homework Help, Walking Social Group, and Board Games Club, all free. They also partner in community events like Cultures of The Hills.

Hills Community Aid: Cultures Of The HillsMonique will proudly represent her Japanese heritage as an organizer and panellist at Cultures of The Hills #4, featuring Japanese, Italian, and Irish cultures. The event takes place on Wednesday, 4 June, 10am-1pm at Pioneer Theatre and Community Centre.

Light refreshments and networking begin at 10am. Registration is required and can be done by scanning the QR code or visiting www.hca.org.au.
