Hills Bulls Bask in Oztag Glory

By Lawrence Machado

The Hills Bulls youngsters covered themselves in Oztag glory with three teams lifting titles in their age groups and the club finishing third overall in the NSW club championship.

The girls brought home the U14 and U10 titles while the boys captured the U12 crown. The Bulls entered 18 teams, with 15 sides making the quarter-finals, 10 entering the semi-finals and seven progressing to the grand finals

The three overall titles capped another successful Oztag championships for the Bulls, who unlike many other clubs, only run one Oztag competition each year because they don’t have enough ovals.

Club president Michael Gremmo was beaming after the successes at the February event played across two venues in Coffs Harbour and Bass Hill because of the huge number of participants.

“Our teams did extremely well seeing that our club only runs one Oztag event every year,” Gremmo said. “We are very proud because this is an important competition featuring more than 360 teams from all over NSW.

“The Bulls teams are picked after our 10-week competition but if we had more oval spaces, we could run winter and summer competitions which will give us more experience.”

Oztag is a hybrid game combining skills from rugby league, rugby union and touch football without the contact. The Bulls representatives also include those with soccer and AFL backgrounds.

Gremmo said it was an amazing result thanks to the hard work and dedication shown by the coaching staff, but “most of all the amazing efforts by our junior boys and girls”.

The Bulls’ domestic competitions run from September to December from six years to seniors. Details: baulkhamhills.oztag.com.au/
