Hawkesbury Australia Day Awards Now Open for 2026 Nominations
Hawkesbury City Council is calling for nominations for the 2026 Australia Day Awards, offering an opportunity to recognise outstanding individuals and groups who contribute to the local community in meaningful ways.
The annual awards celebrate people who go above and beyond, regardless of recognition or weather, whether through volunteer work, everyday acts of kindness, or long-term community leadership. Categories are open to both individuals and groups, including a posthumous award for someone who made a lasting impact.
Last year’s Citizen of the Year, Sarah Cassim, was recognised for her work as a business consultant and founder of the Hawkesbury Women in Business group, which now has over 1,000 members. She said the award represents more than personal achievement.
“Australia Day is about honouring the contributions of individuals and communities who work tirelessly to make Australia a better place,” she said.
“For me, it’s also a chance to reflect on the values that shape our unique Hawkesbury identity—compassion, inclusivity and resilience.
“What inspires me most about the Hawkesbury is its heart. It’s a place where people genuinely care about one another and come together to face challenges. The sense of community here is unique, and the spirit of collaboration fuels the passion for community-building.”
Award categories include:
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year
- Community Organisation of the Year
- Sports Person of the Year
- Local Hero Award
- Environmental Award
- Arts and Culture Award
- Commemorative Plaque (Posthumous Award)
Recipients will be honoured at a dedicated Australia Day event in January, where they will be invited to bring along family and friends.
Nominations close on Sunday, 17 September 2025. To nominate, visit the Council website at hawkesbury.nsw.gov.au.
