Get FREE Native Plants This August
Hornsby Shire Council is excited to announce the return of its much-loved Native Plant Giveaways program this August, inviting all residents to deepen their connection with the local environment.
This initiative, set to take place on Friday, August 29, and Saturday, August 30, will offer residents the chance to collect four free native plants, encouraging sustainable gardening practices across the Shire.
The event will be held at the Council’s Warada Ngurang Community Nursery in Pennant Hills, where attendees can choose from an impressive selection of native grasses, groundcovers, shrubs, climbers, and trees—cultivated with care by dedicated staff and volunteers.
In addition to providing free plants, attendees will benefit from the expertise of Council staff and volunteers on-site. They will be available to offer guidance on selecting the best plant species to suit individual gardening needs. Informational posters will also be displayed, helping residents to choose plants that thrive in their specific garden conditions while considering size and desirable features.
Since its inception in 2003, the Native Plant Giveaways program has become a cherished event among local gardening enthusiasts, providing tens of thousands of native plants to homes across the Hornsby Shire. Mayor Warren Waddell emphasized the program’s role in preserving local ecosystems, stating, “Our Native Plant Giveaways provide free local native plants which help preserve the integrity of our bushland and support ecosystems. Every home gardener has an important role in protecting our biodiversity, particularly our native flora and fauna.”
The Council’s efforts have garnered praise for fostering community enthusiasm for preserving the natural beauty of the Shire’s native bushland. “It’s always a delight to see our community’s enthusiasm for our native bushland and to know that these carefully grown native plants will find many homes around the Bushland Shire,” added Mayor Waddell.
Residents are reminded that each household in Hornsby Shire is eligible to collect four free native plants per calendar year. Bookings are essential and will open at 9 AM on Monday, July 21.
