The successful Hills Hornets Under-18 girls and Under-14 boys are competing for national basketball honours after emerging premiers this season.

The confident girls are in Joondalup, WA, until September 22 competing at the first U18 Australian Club Championships. The boys will be gunning for honours thousands of kilometres away in Victoria, but both teams can be assured of great online support from their many fans in The Hills District.

This prestigious event is a part of the inaugural HoopFest 2024 in WA, which brings together the professional men and women players from around the country, along with the best club juniors.

The Hornets girls are regarded as one of the top 40 Under-18 female teams in Australia and will relish the chance to have some bragging honours at the highest level.

“It is an incredible achievement to qualify, as our Hills Hornets make the top 40 teams in Australia,” the Hills Basketball Association said. “The hard work of the team and their coach, Robert Meyrick has not gone unnoticed, and we can’t wait to see how it pays off during the tournament.

Meanwhile, the talented Hornets boys are travelling to Victoria for the Under-14 Australian Club Championships in Casey, Victoria, from September 22-27. The Hills boys will come up against the leading young male basketball players from all the states, giving them the opportunity of bringing home more glory.

Last year, the Under-14 boys finished seventh overall at this competition and were ranked first in the NSW.

“Our Hills Hornets U14 Boys Premier have qualified in the top 24 teams in the country, which is an incredible achievement in itself,” the Hills Basketball Association said. “The team was extremely successful in their regular season and will be working hard to show what they’ve got on a national stage.

“We’re excited to watch (head coach) Xander Papadopoulos and the team compete at the highest level.”

“HoopsFest is the first of its kind and is set to be the biggest and best weekend in the sport’s history,” NBL CEO David Stevenson said.
