Brightside
Brightside is a free 60-day program that gives people living with mental health issues the opportunity to enhance their physical health, wellbeing and social engagement.
YMCA Brightside promotes exercise as a recovery mechanism for people with a mental illness. The program runs for 60 days with unlimited access to our facilities.
Here’s an outline of how it works.
Step 1 – Referral
We accept new participants through referral. Referrals can come from a doctor, social worker, psychiatrist, psychologist or other mental health professional, or carer. Self-referrals are another option although we may ask a health professional to confirm the program is suitable.
Step 2 – We’ll call you
Once we’ve received the form, a Brightside program leader will contact you to talk about the program to make sure it’s right for you. If we can help, we’ll arrange the first meeting and introduction to the YMCA.
Step 3 – First visit
We’ll arrange for a program leader to personally meet and greet you for a full orientation. This will include a tour of the centre, a general health check, goal-setting and a fitness consultation to develop a personalised exercise program.
Step 4 – Begin the journey
At each weekly catch up you will speak with the program leader about your progress, general health and mood. We can adapt the program if needed.
Step 5 – Program review
At the end of 60 days, the program leader will meet you to review the program and explore options to continue exercising at Hawkesbury Oasis. We’ll also ask you to provide feedback which we’ll share with your health professional.
