Local residents and their pets are invited to the annual Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter Open Day, to be held on Saturday, 30 July from 9:30am to noon, as a launch event ahead of Local Government Week.
Organised by the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter, the Open Day will include animal focused market stalls, a mobile dog wash, Australian Working Dog Rescue demonstrations, and a BBQ. There will be free micro-chipping (Hawkesbury residents only, maximum of two per household, between 9:30am – 11:30am).
People with ex-shelter dogs and cats are also welcome to come along with their pets and share stories of their new lives.
The Hawkesbury Community Nursery, next door to the Shelter, will again be offering free plants to residents on the same day in celebration of National Tree Day – with over 1,000 native plants to give away.
Shelter volunteers will also be on hand to talk about their experiences and to encourage more people to volunteer.
Mayor of Hawkesbury, Councillor Mary Lyons-Buckett says that the Animal Shelter Open Day has become one of the most successful Council-run events.
“Around 500 people and their pets attended the combined annual Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter Open Day and National Tree Day giveaway in 2016. Two dogs and one cat were rehomed, with lots of others putting their names down on a waiting list for a pet, when they are ready to be adopted. The Shelter also raised over $400 in cash donations. We hope to see you at the 2017 Open Day which is shaping up to be the best one yet”, said the Mayor.
Located at 10 Mulgrave Road, Mulgrave, the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter covers 1030 square metres with 70 kennels and a large cattery area and services Hawkesbury City Council, The Hills Shire Council, Hornsby Shire Council and Penrith City Council.
The Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter operates Monday to Friday: 9am – 12.30pm and 2pm – 4.30pm, Saturday 9.30am – 11.30am and Sunday 7am – 9am. For more information about Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter Open Day, please call 4560 4644.
