Celebrating 100 Years – Richmond RAAF Base

Following on from the success of the Richmond RAAF Base Open Day in 2024, comes the Airshow that will mark the 100th Anniversary of the Base. Much planning has gone into this celebration – an event which has not occurred since 1991!

I remember the Open Day with great affection, witnessing individuals, friends and families eager to explore the displays and interact with Defence personnel. The interest was so great that tickets sold out very quickly.

There is such a rich history of Defence in Hawkesbury, so it was great to see the Richmond Base open to the public to showcase the establishment. I can only imagine the number of children who went home with a newfound dream to one day be in aviation.

On 30th June 2025, RAAF Base Richmond marked 100 years of establishment, when No. 3 (Composite) Squadron’s first 3 aircrafts arrived on 30th June 1925 as part of the unit’s relocation from Point Cook in Victoria. To commemorate this historic occasion, the Royal Australian Air Force will conduct an airshow at RAAF Base Richmond over the weekend of 27 and 28 September 2025. However, don’t let the name deceive you – the airshow event will also showcase military capabilities on the ground!

It is a weekend I look forward to attending to witness the skills exhibited by pilots and crew flying the F-35A Lightning II, F/A-18F Super Hornet, Hawk 127, Roulettes Aerobatic Team, C-17A Globemaster, C-130J Hercules, C-27J Spartan, KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport, E-7A Wedgetail, P-8 Poseidon, and 100SQN Heritage aircraft.
