WOMEN IN BUSINESS- Carlii Lyon

Carlii Lyon wasn’t going to let any secrets slip about her former clients, including Miranda Kerr, but she did tell the audience at the Sydney Hills Business Chamber’s Celebrating Women in Business lunch afew truths.

The self-described high school dropout built up her own PR agency at the age of 22. She now advises people on personal branding an encourages them to: Be seen, be heard and allow themselves to be celebrated.

“We are here for a reason. We are here to do something. Have a level of self-belief,” she said.

If anyone epitomised that more it was Hills local Michelle Lee who earlier this year became the first Australian woman to row across any ocean solo taking 68 days to row 5,000 Kms.

Two years before the Talker Whisky Atlantic Challenge she had never rowed before but after reading a book about the challenge she knew it was something she had to do rather than “die wondering.”

So, at 46, the massage therapist helped built her specially designed boat, joined the Hills Men’s Shed and set herself a target.

Talking between video clips of her extraordinary journey between the Canary Islands and the West Indies she admitted at times she really struggled with the isolation and rowing for 14 hours a day.

“Day 46 I really struggled. I had high anxiety …
I felt so vulnerable.
“I realised then it wasn’t a race, it was a survival challenge.”

Her message since the trip has been: “Think you can, and you will.”

Ashley Fell from McCrindle delivered the results of the fifth Business Performance Sentiment Index carried out for the Sydney Hills Business Chamber and Hills Shire Council.

She said more than 3000 new businesses were opening their doors in the Hills each year.

The PSI found that despite the performance of the national economy business owners and managers in the Hills remained optimistic.
