WINTERFEST

Explore all things medieval at WINTERFEST, which is held on the first weekend of the winter school holidays, the 1st and 2nd of July, at the Hawkesbury Showground, between Richmond & Windsor.

Winterfest is one of the longestrunning annual medieval fairs in the Sydney metro region. This two-day event features an extensive program for the whole family.

Highlights include:

• The Winterfest Jousting Tournament – see the face-off between champions in the sport of kings!

• The Mounted Skill-at-Arms, demonstrating the skills required for knights in training and for battle.

• Full Flight Birds of Prey show which will see raptors soaring above and through the crowd. There will also be educational talks about birds of prey in Australia and the history of falconry.

• Melee Battles with knights in armour from a range of historical periods, which concludes with the ‘Grand Melee’!

• Take a stroll along the Reenactors’s row, where you can try helmets, armour, shields and weapons. There will be friendly re-enactors from the dark ages through to the 17th century and they will be happy share their knowledge about the people and period they are re-enacting.

Hands-on activities including a traditional archery range, Celtic drumming workshops, and the chance to learn to use a rapier. Children have the opportunity to practice their skills with (safe) swords and get creative by colouring-in medieval themed drawings and decorating swords and shields. Anyone can also meet and greet with the Winterfest unicorns, who love pats from the kids.

You can also visit the ‘The Village Green’ with lots of educational and interactive displays and activities, and take a stroll through the ‘Merchant’s Row’ and browse the vibrant range of stalls including quality artisan and handcrafted wares.

There will be roaming entertainers, including ‘Feldergast the Fool’ the wandering jester, face-painting for the children and a great selection of quality food vendors to choose from.

There will also be the Winterfest Costume and Cosplay competition. All event-goers are encouraged to wear something a bit different from the usual. Come along in a medieval-inspired outfit or fantasy-style clothing; all medieval periods, cultures, and styles are welcome.
