VALUED VOLUNTEERS

Long time volunteers Ruth Petersen (35 years) and Marilyn Tobin (34 years) were honoured at the recent Annual General meeting of Hills Community Aid.

Both women volunteer with Learning in the Hills which is run at the Balcombe Heights Estate.

Ruth, who runs the Stitches Class, has held a variety of volunteer roles from when it first opened in 1984 as Baulkham Hills Leisure Learning Centre.

Marilyn moved from a student to a teacher starting with chess. She has been teaching Mah Jong as a volunteer for over 20 years.

Board President Maria Kovacic said volunteers were “critical” to the success of Hills Community Aid.

She said the aim of Hills Community Aid, which turns 50 next year, was to help create “safe, healthy, connected and inclusive communities”.

As well as Learning in the Hills,  Hills Community Aid runs a huge range of programs including training and upskilling, financial literacy and No Interest Loan program, plus  the ride sharing service, HillsCarPal.

It also runs Safe Communities programs which include Moving Forward for victims of domestic abuse.
