Momento Hospitality provides transitional housing for Women’s Community Shelters (WCS)

Momento Hospitality has donated a property to be used as transitional accommodation for clients of Women’s Community Shelters in the Hills area and families referred from the WCS Pathways Home program.

In partnership with the Community Housing partner, Evolve Housing, the property will house families for 12 months or longer.

“Women and children escaping domestic violence have enough to worry about as they rebuild their lives,” says Marcello Colosimo, CEO of Momento Hospitality Group, “Having secure housing means there’s one less thing to be worried about on their road to recovery.”

Transitional housing in properties like the one donated by Momento Hospitality allows for a streamlined referral process where women and children can go straight from crisis accommodation to transitional housing.

According to Women’s Community Shelters Acting Chief Executive Officer Simone Parsons, more than one in two women across Australia who seek a bed in a crisis shelter are turned away every night, mostly due to a lack of space, and more than 56,000 women are homeless every night in Australia.

To help address this issue, the WCS Pathways Home program identifies under-utilised or vacant property to use primarily as transitional housing.

Since it was established in 2018, the Pathways Home program has gone from strength to strength, building its portfolio of meanwhile use properties through a partnership with developers, community housing providers, property owners, and businesses like Momento Hospitality. In the last 12 months, Pathways Home has provided safe transitional housing to 116 women and children and delivered over 20,000 bed nights to the sector.

This housing program established by Women’s Community Shelters forms part of a broader strategy to increase available housing for women and children leaving WCS Shelters so that women and children fleeing domestic violence and requiring secure housing won’t have to be turned away.
