KINDNESS IS KEY

When I took my mum out for a pre-birthday lunch the Sunday before her 85th birthday I had no idea that it would become an internet sensation.

A teenager’s Random Act of Kindness at a Castle Hill cafe attracted more than 1,700 likes on Facebook as hundreds of people have embraced the positive gesture.

I had taken my mum to lunch at Passiontree Velvet at Castle Towers where we enjoyed a wonderful lunch and coffee.

At a neighbouring table at the crowded cafe was a young man with his mum. As they left, he put a receipt on our table, and said he hoped we had a lovely day. By the time I had worked out that he had paid for our meal he and his mum had disappeared from view. My mum and I were just stunned at such a wonderful random act of kindness.

I decided that I had to let as many people know as possible so posted on the Hills District Mums Facebook site as well as my own.

Everyone loved the gesture. Joshua’s mum contacted me via messenger to thank me for the post and to tell me that her son was 16 years old and attended Glenwood High.

She said her family had often spoken about how one act of kindness can change someone’s day and while they were sitting in the cafe “the time seemed right”.

While Joshua didn’t want his full name used he did say “wouldn’t it be good if others read about it and they started doing it too … that’s what it is all about isn’t it, encouraging others to pay it forward, to give back and to watch the domino affect of one act”

His mum said seeing the reaction on social media had proved that one act can have a domino affect on those around.

“It doesn’t have to be big (to) touch someone’s heart,” she said.

Thank you Joshua for not only making our day but for warming the hearts of hundreds of other strangers.
