The Hills is teeming with sporting talent’ says Mayor Keane

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Councillor Yvonne Keane, has accepted an Appreciation Award from the Western Sydney Academy of Sport at their 12th Annual Athletes Awards night, recognising Council’s ongoing support of young sports people.

Mayor Keane thanked the Academy for their commitment to developing young athletes and acknowledged that around a third of the Academy’s sports students are from the Hills.

“We have some wonderful young athletes who are incredibly dedicated to being the best they can be,” Mayor Keane said.

“The Hills Shire is teeming with sporting talent and we are proud of our connection with the Western Sydney Academy of Sport to assist in developing the champions of the future,” she said.

The Hills is represented at the Academy in AFL, golf, cycling, hockey, netball, softball and triathlon.

“Council is continuing to develop new sports fields in our new residential areas, as well as refreshing existing fields, not only to support our elite athletes but also to encourage involvement in sport at all levels,” she said.

“I recently attended the Super Sikhs Sports and Cultural Event at Bernie Mullane Reserve and was blown away by the phenomenal turnout,” she said.

“People of all ages and ability enjoyed a fantastic weekend where more than 60 teams competed in variety of sports and games in a truly amazing display of community and camaraderie.”

“I look forward to continuing to work hard to ensure we plan our new areas to include a range of spectacular open spaces that create opportunities for everyone to play and be active,” Mayor Keane said.
