Helen Bradey never imagined herself living in a retirement village but the mother-of-two couldn’t be happier with her new lifestyle.
Helen and her husband Colin were living in their dream home, a four-bedroom home in Kellyville, when her husband passed away.
“A retirement village never entered my head when my husband died. He was a very handy man but after he died things needed fixing.
“They were minor maintenance problems really but they started to build up and trying to get someone out to fix them was a problem and I thought, ‘Why I am I worrying about these things?’ I decided to look in the Kellyville area because it was where my doctor, dentist and hairdresser were.’”
Helen said she visited about four of five villages before she saw the plans for the stage 3 development of BaptistCare The Gracewood Retirement Village at Kellyville.
“I just felt really happy when I was given a tour and bought off the plan about a year before I moved in. It gave me time to sort my things out.”
She was in her 60s and many of her friends said she was too young to think about a retirement village.
“Every day I wake up and I think I am so glad I moved in,” she says. “I have a beautiful threebedroom apartment which is my forever home. It is so easy. I go swimming when I want to and I don’t have to clean the pool. I don’t have to mow the lawn or water the plants every night. Before I moved to The Gracewood everything was up to me. It’s nice that I don’t have to do those things anymore.”
Helen has joined the garden group at The Gracewood and the craft group and plays cards and mahjong. She also paints and uses her third bedroom as an art studio and sewing room.
“I really like the community here. I can have a coffee with friends or invite someone over for a drink in the evening.”
