More than a 1000 flags were planted next to the graves of veterans in a moving ceremony that spanned both Castle Hill cemetery and Castlebrook Memorial Park in the early hours of Australia Day.

Leonard Smith said a moving welcome country before a short service to honour former servicemen and women buried at Castlebrook.

The Castle Hill RSL Pipe Band played as volunteers walked through the park “planting” flags next to graves bearing service insignia.

Every year, since the service started 9 years ago, Ann and Graham Brown have planted flags including one next to the grave of their son, Trooper Jason Brown, a former Oakhill student who died in Afghanistan while serving with the SAS (Special Air Service Regiment) in August 2010.

He was 29. Hills Mayor Michelle Byrne planted a flag next to the grave of her grandfather who was a veteran.
